Honiton Carers recognise that unpaid carers are often isolated and lonely and almost always physically and emotionally exhausted as a result of their often 24/7 caring responsibilities.
We aim to help by offering weekly respite in relaxed and friendly surroundings. Free transport is provided if necessary. We meet weekly and run different sessions some for carers only and some where the carers can bring their cared for. We invite speakers once a month to talk about caring and non caring topics. We have monthly Art & Craft sessions and also have a monthly Walk & Chat. The remaining meetings are socials at Combe Garden centre.
We signpost to other appropriate organisations including Devon Carers. Our Chair is a Devon Carer Ambassador which enables her to keep up with the latest carer support available.
We are currently supporting approximately 70 carers and ex-carers and pride ourselves that we offer ongoing support to ex-carers for as long as they wish. Ex-carers often become volunteers and provide excellent peer support for new carers.
Honiton Carers rely on a very small team of volunteers who fundraise by running stalls at fetes, selling donated items on line, applying for grants and receiving donations from the community and members.
Respite time is essential for carers looking after loved ones in what are often very challenging times. We regularly hear how grateful the carers and ex-carers are for our ongoing support.
